UBC DECISION AN F ; ITS APOLOGY AN F-!

Statement on decision regarding John Furlong speaking engagement
UBC President and Vice-Chancellor, Santa Ono, today made the following statement in response to public criticism of UBC’s decision to cancel John Furlong’s contract to speak at the upcoming Millennium Scholarship Breakfast:

‘ UBC made this decision in good faith, but without proper consideration of its potential impact on Mr. Furlong or his family. While this decision was made without my knowledge or that of the UBC Board of Governors, I deeply regret this error and have apologized to Mr. Furlong on behalf of UBC. We do so again here.

While some take issue with Mr. Furlong, he also has a great number of supporters in the community, and there can be no question over his record of public service and his extraordinary contributions to amateur sport, to BC and to Canada. There is also no question that he deserved better in UBC’s handling of this matter.

At root, the university’s decision-making throughout this matter did not meet the standard I am eager to instill. While a modern university should neither court nor shy from controversy, our decision-making should be the result of a robust deliberative process.

In this case, we have no one to blame but ourselves and I will be working with the leadership team on ways to ensure we do better in the future.

We hope these events do not distract from the importance of the 18th annual Millennium Scholarship Breakfast. This is a vital fundraising event supporting scholarships for student athletes and I’m hopeful that it will attract the same level of community support as ever.

Finally, we wish to be clear that our event sponsor had no role in this decision and remains supportive of the event.’

Professor Santa J. Ono
President and Vice-Chancellor

I DON’T KNOW WHAT MADE ME MORE UPSET : ONE , HEARING OF THE INVITATION TO JOHN FURLONG TO SPEAK AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BC BEING REVOKED OR TWO, THE PRESIDENT’S RESPONSE OF ‘APOLOGY.’

MAN , DO WE HAVE A PROBLEM ?

IF THE UNIVERSITY WAS TO TRULY APOLOGIZE THEY WOULD REINSTATE THE INVITATION AND HAVE MR. FURLONG SPEAK . THAT’S THE MISTAKE . NOTHING SHORT OF THIS MEETS ANY REASONABLE STANDARD. THERE IS NO FACTUAL REASON FOR THE INVITATION BEING REVOKED . SO MR. PRESIDENT , RATHER THAN SOME WISHY WASHY WORDS , ACT TO UNDO THE WRONG ! LIVE UP TO RATIONAL THOUGHT AND DECISIONS BASED ON EVIDENCE.

‘UBC MADE ITS DECISION IN GOOD FAITH ” THE PRESIDENT SAYS . I TAKE THAT TO MEAN THE DECISION TO REVOKE? WHAT DO YOU MEAN IN GOOD FAITH? THERE IS NOTHING GOOD FAITH ABOUT THIS. THE UNIVERSITY WAS QUITE AWARE THAT MR. FURLONG IS INNOCENT OF THE CHARGES THAT WERE LEVELLED AGAINST HIM AND THAT TO BOW TO THE WHIMS OF A FEW IS IRRATIONAL , DEFYING THE VALUES AND PRINCIPLES OF ANY PLACE WORTHY OF CALLING ITSELF A UNIVERSITY.

IT’S GOT NOTHING TO DO, IN THE FIRST INSTANCE, OF IMPACT ON MR. FURLONG AND HIS FAMILY OR HOW MANY SUPPORTERS HE HAS IN THE COMMUNITY OR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY ; AT ITS CORE IT’S GOT EVERYTHING TO DO WITH RIGHT AND WRONG!

THE PRESIDENT SAYS ‘ IT IS NO QUESTION THAT MR. FURLONG DESERVED BETTER IN UBC’S HANDLING OF THIS MATTER.’ WELL , MR. PRESIDENT, DON’T HIDE BEHIND THE WORDS , YOU HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE IT SO , ISSUE THE INVITATION TO MR. FURLONG AGAIN.

‘In this case, we have no one to blame but ourselves and I will be working with the leadership team on ways to ensure we do better in the future.’

SO SAYS THE PRESIDENT. THIS IS THE PROBLEM TODAY , MISTAKES ARE MADE , A FLIMSY APOLOGY IS ISSUED AND WE WILL WORK ON DOING BETTER.

DO YOU NEED TO MEET WITH YOUR LEADERSHIP TEAM FOR THEM TO ACT HONESTLY ??? STOP INSULTING US.

IF ONE LOOKS UP THE UBC WEBSITE, ONE OF THE HEADLINES ONE READS ;
‘ STANDING UP FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AT CAMPUS OKINAGAN.’

HOW CAN THIS BE TRUE WITH DECISIONS LIKE THIS ONE INVOLVING MR. FURLONG.

AND BY THE WAY , DID ANYONE GET FIRED ? DID ANYONE PAY A PRICE FOR THIS TERRIBLE DECISION. LIKE IN MANY GOVERNMENTS AND ITS AGENCIES TODAY , NO ONE PAYS A PRICE FOR WRONGDOING. JUST A FEW FANCY WORDS AND EVERYONE IS SUPPOSE TO MOVE ON.

IF THERE ARE NO CONSEQUENCES FOR SUCH DECISIONS THE CHANCES A LIKE SITUATION WILL HAPPEN AGAIN ARE HIGH IF NOT INEVITABLE.

REVOKING THE DECISION AN F . THE SO CALLED APOLOGY F-.

  1. This unfortunate man has had his life ruined by a woman making proven false accusations. What repercussions has this woman suffered ? It seems none …yet, John Furlong has …I think the President should offer up his resignation over this travesty.

  2. Very true Brian. Well written. I’m not sure but I did hear that John was kicked off the speaker’s list due to one complaint by an Indian. (These days I don’t allow myself to be “politically correct”). It seems the crazy antics by American students is creeping up here. And today I hear the torture of the white boy by four black kids is not a hate crime. It sure would be if the victim was a black boy. Crazy world we have allowed to grow over the years.
