Former Canadian Chief Justice McLaughlin Finally Exits Hong Kong Court—But Everything is OK There.

On of the embarrassments Canada has faced  these last few years is the face of our former Chief Justice on the High Court of Hong Kong —a former democracy now an increasingly repressive  regime since it has come under China’s umbrella.

What possesses someone to do such a thing is perplexing.

A recent UK Judge who resigned from the same court had this to say :

‘One of her colleagues, Jonathan Sumption, wrote Monday that judges operate in an “impossible political environment created by China.”

In an article published by the Financial Times, Sumption described a growing “paranoia of the authorities” and judges being intimidated by a “darkening political mood” in the Asian financial hub.

“Hong Kong, once a vibrant and politically diverse community, is slowly becoming a totalitarian state. The rule of law is profoundly compromised in any area about which the government feels strongly,” he wrote. “The least sign of dissent is treated as a call for revolution.”

But our Beverly McLaughlin had nothing bad to say about the system .

Another Judge who resigned in 2022 said :

‘ In 2022, another British judge, Robert Reed, stepped down saying the administration “has departed from values of political freedom and freedom of expression.”

Given our present PM has broken the law five times and our present Chief Justice has issued inappropriate comments about the truckers convoy and our present leader of the opposition  refuses to propose amendments to the conflict of interest act to see to it that MP’s who break the law cannot serve as law makers , it is little wonder that Ms McLaughlin is so cavalier about her role with the Hong Kong communist controlled system.

  1. Do you think that if the Stanley Cup continues its sojourn in the USA, we could swap our Chief Justice and a third round draft choice to Hong Kong for Her Honour?

  2. Canada is currently no better off than Hong Kong in my opinion. We have the Coutts boys and Convoy organizers still in prison or still going through the courts while supposed political leaders collude with foreign agents and break the law while still holding office. Nothing to see here but the turning of Canada into a banana republic.

The political system in Canada needs major reform and the fiddler plays while the ship sinks. No wonder business owners and the wealthy are fleeing Canada in droves.
